What are food rules? Do I have any?

Updated: Apr 2, 2021

These are food guidelines, only WAY more strict and are developed through the interaction with our diet culture.

"That food is bad"

"That food is a treat"

"I ate too much at lunch so I have to eat less for dinner"

"I don't deserve that brownie"

"I have to eat with small utensils"

"It's too late to eat"

You're probably thinking, "Yep. I guess I do have food rules... But isn't this normal?" Actually, it isn't.

Diet culture introduces us to the many rules associated with food because it is a system of beliefs that equates thinness with wellness. It provides you with false hope to your body image, which has us then creating these food rules that dictate what, when and how much we are allowed to eat. Diet culture ultimately takes away our power and ability to dial in and listen to our own internal cues and to trust our body, hunger and food choices.

Relying solely on a list of external “rules” that tell us what we should/shouldn’t eat, when we should eat, when we deserve a food, how much we are hungry for....etc. is not normal.

Diet culture doesn’t know our own unique individual needs. It doesn’t know our energy output, our dietary preferences or how we are feeling that day.

Only YOU know that wisdom.

But in order to tap into it, you need to ditch the rules.

Enjoy them freely!
